Experiment-Based Fatigue Behaviors and Damage Detection Study of Headed Shear Studs in Steel–Concrete Composite Beams

Many in-service bridges with steel–concrete composite beams are currently aging and experiencing performance deterioration. Under long-term cyclic loads from traffic on bridges, headed shear studs in vulnerable to fatigue damage. The comprehensive understanding of behaviors the feasible detection damage is, thus, crucial for accurate numerical simulation crack propagation process. paper, experimentally investigates through push-out tests three specimens. failure modes strain evolution specimens analyzed. lives compared S–N curves AASHTO, Eurocode 4 BS5400 codes. details then detected using ultrasonic non-destructive testing. results show that root fracture is main mode under loading. life estimations based current codes (i.e., BS5400) can be safely guaranteed only different safety redundancies. at stud shows a consistent increasing trend followed by decreasing behavior after reaching peak value loading cycles. Moreover, feasibility testing combination measurement proved.
